BEWARE of these geyser brands that are looting you.

With temperatures dropping every day in North India, it has become extremely difficult to open the tap to cold water. The water feels like a thousand needles are trying to pierce your skin.
In this cold season, a water geyser has become more of a need than a want or a luxury. However, people often fall for the marketing tricks of some sub par brands that offer these geysers and go onto invest in a poorly built product. So today, we'll discuss how to avoid that.
We'll begin with the basics of the working of a geyser. Next we'll take a look at the tactics of some brands to loot your hard earned money and then we'll take a look at the requirements a geyser must have that will ensure its durability. We'll finally conclude with some options available in the market that offer the most bang for the buck at variety of tank sizes.
The basics:-
See, there is a very simple and basic principle behind the working of geysers. There is a heating element which warms the water and that warm water is stored in an insulated tank which is offered in various sizes. This is the simple functioning of any geyser of any brand.
Now, what the important thing here is to understand how some companies that make geysers in India cut costs and maximize their profits.
Lets take a look at their tactics:-
  • No Reasearch and Development. Sub par brands do not spend funds on developing a new technology or reducing wattage. What they do is: copy what the leading manufacturers are making and present it in the market for a cheaper price with obviously the sub standard equipment used in their manufacturing.
  • Brands like Inalsa, Maharaja offer ceramic coated heating element in their geysers. In my observation, this is by far their best strategy to make profits as these ceramic coated heating elements are very in durable and require replacements every season which means additional income for these companies as heating element is not covered under warranty. You must go with a geyser that has a glass-coated heating element.
  • Warranty of 5/7 years offered on the tank and 1 year on the rest of the parts which technically means you get only one year warranty on your brand new geyser because its never the tank that gets damaged its always the other components.
Now, you might be wondering, how I have such a deep insight about this. The answer is that my father works at Crompton in the Consumer Electronics department. Its his lineage that I have acquired.
Having said that, before we go on to decide which is the geyser you should go for, we must understand what you must look for in a geyser.
  • Energy Consumption- Using a geyser in your home can really take a toll on your savings, if it is not energy efficient. So always go for at least a 4 or 5 star rating appliance, not only in geysers but also in other categories of home appliances.
  • Heating Element- This is the most important factor you should consider while making a buying decision. There are two types of heating elements in the market- Glass coated and Copper coated. From my personal experience, I would advice you to always invest in a glass-coated heating element if you are interested in keeping the geyser for at least 78 years.
  • Family size-Most people do not need a geyser beyond 15L capacity. If you are a family of three, then I would say, 15L is more than sufficient for you. You must not waste your money in buying a higher capacity geyser. But, if you live in a joint family and 45 people use the same bathroom and thus the same geyser, it would be wise to invest in 25 L capacity one.
  • Wattage-Now, here we do not need to go into technicalities of this term, for a layman wattage means how fast or how readily you can get hot water after the geyser has been turned ON. In my suggestion, always go for a higher watt geyser as it saves time as well as electricity.
Additional Features-
a. Automatic thermal cut-off
b. Safety valve for pressure release
c. Adjustable thermostat settings
d. Rust-proof outer and inner body
Having stated the above points, I would like to zero down on just a few geysers that comply with all of the above mentioned points and are pretty affordable as well.
3 Litre instant capacity geyser
10 Litre capacity geyser
15 Litre capacity geyser
25 Litre capacity geyser
I hope this information helps.
Good Luck. Peace !
